Why have a funeral?
It is important to recognize that funerals are for the living. Funerals help family and friends acknowledge loss and take the first step to overcoming grief. A funeral brings people together at a time when they most need each other's care and support. A meaningful service tailored to the needs and desires of the family will be an important occasion for family and friends to remember the loved one and to share the experience together.
Can I still have a visitation if cremation is chosen as a final form of disposition?
Yes, you may have a visitation prior to the cremation being performed. You may also have a funeral service as well at your local church or at the funeral home.
Is embalming required by law?
No, law does not require embalming. However, if you wish to have any type of viewing/visitation or if the body will be held for a considerable amount of time, embalming is strongly recommended. Law requires embalming if the deceased is to be shipped out of state.
What should we do when a death occurs?
Whether the death takes place at home, in a hospital, or nursing home, you can call Ivins Funeral Home 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. David and staff are always available at anytime, day or night.
What if a death occurs out of state?
If the death occurs outside of Illinois, you should call Ivins Funeral Home as soon as you can. We will coordinate with a local funeral director at the place of death. Because of our activities with our state, regional, and national associations, we know many other funeral service professionals, personally.
What should I bring to the arrangement conference?
When you come to the conference, you may want to bring with you the following items:
- Military discharge papers, if applicable
- A recent photograph for hairdresser/preparation purposes
- Clothing - consider what he/she would wear during life, including all undergarments, shoes (if desired), and for women, an outfit at the neckline and long sleeves are preferred
Jewelry & personal items - these items can either be brought to the arrangement conference, or on the day of the visitation. These items may remain with the deceased or may be saved for family or friends
- Vital information - including social security number, date of birth, place of birth, mother's and father's names, as well as any names/information for a death notice or obituary.
How can we get pricing information?
If you are interested in finding out how much the type of funeral service you wish will cost, simply stop by or give us a call or email and we can have a General Price List sent to you.
Can we transfer our existing pre-arrangement to your funeral home?
Yes, if you have made a pre-arrangement in the past with another funeral home (financed or non-financed), it is completely transferable to Ivins. You must understand that you own that prearrangement and may go to any funeral home you desire. At Ivins Funeral Home, we accept ALL pre-arrangements made from other firms for any reason; for example, this could be moving to a different city or state, or a funeral home changing ownership. Simply bring in a copy of your pre-arrangement forms and we'll take care of the rest. You don't even need to contact the previous funeral home.
